Burnley vs Pompey: Result

Last updated : 25 September 2007 By Jim Bonner
Welcome to the Fratton Faithful live commentary of the Burnley vs Portsmouth League Cup third round tie.

This game surely won't be easy given that we're playing a weakened side against a team who currently lie 6th in the Championship and are unbeaten at home this season. They also swept aside Oldham Athletic 3-0 in the previous round and look a good outfit this season.

Live Text

19:15: Striker problems for Pompey. David Nugent is the only fit striker in the squad at the moment with Utaka out with a virus, Kanu still struggling and Benjani doubtful after being advised not to play with the injury.

19:19: Benjani hasn't taken that advice and he starts alongside Nugent. No place in the starting XI for Linvoy though, whilst Arnie Mvuemba starts on the right of midfield.

19:24: Djimi Traore scored an infamous own goal at Turf Moor for Liverpool a couple of years ago in the FA Cup. Let's hope he has a better game this time!

19:34: Full team news is now in. Unsworth starts against his former club. I don't have a clue what formation Burnley are playing although Leicester reject Ade Akinbiyi is the only recognised striker out there, with Andy Gray missing out.

19:38: Mark Clattenberg is the referee for the game. I think he's the best referee there is, so now watch him make a costly decision that goes against us!

19:46: Kick Off! Play Up Pompey!

19:48: Richard Hughes goes down early, but he seems OK.

19:52: Not many people have turned up to this one it seems. Radio commentary estimate about 200 Pompey fans have made the journey up to Lancashire. The game sounds scrappy at the moment...

19:54: Not related to this game, but Toddy has scored for Charlton at Luton if anyone was interested. Burnley have a corner....

19:55: Nothing comes of the corner as Pompey manage to clear their lines.

19:58: Burnley have started really well. Good work from Lafferty down the left and it's forced for a corner. Carlisle's effort from that corner doesn't trouble Ashdown though.

20:00: Pompey's first corner is whipped in by Taylor and just missed by Traore. His second corner is taken easily by Kiraly.

20:02: Mendes attempts a trademark thunderbolt and is closer to hitting the cornerflag...

20:03: Toddy's goal has been taken from him and been credited to Dean Sinclair... shame! Distin stops Akinbiyi once again and the resulting corner results to nothing.

20:05: David Nugent is in on goal, rounded the 'keeper and didn't score because he thought he was offside! Oh dear... play to the whistle Nuge!

20:08: They're still talking about that Nugent howler on the radio. Burnley win a couple of corners but Pamarot clears the second one.

20:10: Peter Beagrie is singing Sylvain Distin's praises on Sky Sports, having thwarted Akinbiyi time and time again so far during this game.

20:15: Sounds like a poor game in honesty. Pompey can't keep possession whilst Burnley have had more chances. Mendes and Taylor sound like our best players according to the radio.

20:17: Peter Beagrie reckons that we have a good record in the North West. He obviously hasn't watched us much! Noe Pamarot and Akinbiyi "have words"...

20:19: David Nugent skews a shot wide much to the delight of the home fans.. Distin makes a great challenge on one of the Burnley players. He surely has to be our best player so far?

20:20: Caldwell almost scores from a corner but Ashdown makes a point blank save to keep the scores level.

20:23: Kiraly makes a fantastic save from Matty Taylor by palming away his stinger.

20:26: Another corner to Burnley after Pamarot, Lauren and Ashdown show some misunderstanding. Lafferty has his shot saved following the corner.

20:29: Akinbiyi heads straight into Ashdown's arms following yet another Burnley corner.

20:31: A spell for Pompey, including a corner that came to nothing but at least it will ease some of the pressure.

20:32: Just a minute added time to be played....

20:33: HALF TIME - It's safe to say that Burnley have been the better side but we have created the better chances with Nugent and his awful decision not to play to the whistle as well as Taylor's great shot. 0-0.

20:51: SUBSTITUTION: BENJANI OFF/John UTAKA ON - Seems like a tactical one as Benjani is reportedly fine. The second half of the game begins.

20:53: Michael Duff blocks John Utaka's driving shot. Utaka is already making his presence felt.

20:58: After a period of nothingness, David Nugent gets the ball across the goal after some good build up play and Noe Pamarot is just inches away from tapping it in.

21:01: Pompey have enjoyed their best spell of the game after upping the tempo. The passing has been better and the team have looked brighter since Utaka came on according to commentary.

21:05: Nothing much is happening at the moment. Just think, if the game stays like this then we get extra time and maybe even penalties... Pompey are playing good football now though.

21:07: Alan Mahon attempts a long-range strike a la Pedro Mendes but it flies high and wide. The game is getting open now...

21:09: Ashdown saves from Lafferty as Burnley pile on the pressure, until Alan Mahon puts the ball out sportingly after Pedro Mendes goes down.

21:10: Pedro Mendes seems OK thankfully, after the commentary suggested he may have pulled his calf muscle.

21:14: Lauren's poor pass is intercepted and Burnley look to attack in a 2-on-2 situation but the attack is snuffed out by Distin. That could have been dodgy then....

21:15: James O'Connor is booked for what sounds like persistent fouling after another silly tackle.

21:16: GOAL: DAVID NUGENT - Nuge makes up for his earlier error after slotting past Kiraly after a run down the channel following a long ball by Lauren. Nuge then does an "ear cup" celebration in front of the Burnley fans. Get in!

21:19: Pompey are in control now with another good spell of possession as David Nugent almost grabs another goal after his shot curls just wide of Kiraly's goal.

21:22: SUBSTITUTIONS: David UNSWORTH & James O'CONNOR OFF/Robbie BLAKE & Graham ALEXANDER ON

21:24: Pompey are trying to play keep ball now as they look to close this game out.

21:26: Distin and Pamarot combine to block Mahon's shot and then Mvuemba plays a ball to Utaka who breaks away with pace and wins a corner. Kiraly takes it under no pressure at all...

21:27: Burnley win a corner after a mix-up in the defence but it's cleared by Traore. The Clarets are being more physical and Jamie Ashdown is asking Clattenberg for a foul he thought should have been given.

21:29: SUBSTITUTION: Kyle LAFFERTY OFF/Steve JONES ON

21:29: Ashdown drops the ball and almost gifts Akinbiyi an equaliser...

21:31: Djimi Traore gets booked for clattering with Akinbiyi. Five minutes to hang on as Burnley have a free kick in a dangerous position.

21:32: The free kick is cleared off the line by Richard Hughes and Utaka can break again but the counter-attack amounts to nothing.

21:33: Sylvain Distin sarcastically claps Mark Clattenberg after being booked for giving away a free kick just outside the penalty area.

21:35: That free kick came to nothing as the game enters the final minute. Pompey just need to see this out.

21:36: Alan Mahon shoots wide as 3 minutes of stoppage time are about to be played.

21:38: SUBSTITUTION - Papa BOUBA DIOP ON/Arnold MVUEMBA OFF. That's just a time wasting sub there by Redknapp...

21:39: FULL TIME: BURNLEY 0 POMPEY 1. A final free kick leads to a shot on the edge of the area which is blocked by Hughes before Clattenberg blows the whistle. Nugent takes some abuse from the Burnley fans as he walks off the pitch.

We're in the fourth round!

Final Thoughts: It didn't sound like the best of games but the job is done thanks to a goal from a striker who is out of favour at the moment. Sylvain Distin was our man of the match (again) and most importantly, we've not slipped up on this banana skin.

We can look forward to the fourth round now where no doubt we will draw Arsenal away or something similar. The draw takes place at midday on Soccer Saturday.

Finally, how did you like the live commentary? I would like some feedback from readers as it will give me an idea on if I should run it again for those people who can't follow the game any other way.
