Breaking The Barrier

It's the general consensus that Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United will finish in the top four this season and probably next season and the season after that too.

After all, they have superior finances and squads to the rest of the teams in the division and despite some poor results recently for these four sides, they are all currently "where they belong".

But Pompey are hanging onto their coat tails, ready to pounce on any slip up that might occur in the near future, which may be as early as this Sunday with the top four going head-to-head.

So effectively we could be in the top four of the Premier League after the next round of matches provided we beat Tottenham, although Liverpool have a game in hand on us should we leap them next weekend.

Since we went to Villa and won 3-1 (and before then), some people have touted Pompey as the team most likely to break the monopoly that the top four currently have on the league.

I can see why they are saying that. After all, we're unbeaten at home, got the best away record in the entire division (I still can't believe that stat given previous seasons) and we've only suffered two defeats all season away at Chelsea and Arsenal.

So is it really possible that Pompey could finish in the top four this season and have Fratton Park host Champions League football next year?

I personally think not this season, although I wouldn't completely write off our chances. If we can beat Spurs, go to Anfield and record our seventh straight away win and then claim our first ever Premier League win over Arsenal on Boxing Day then I might believe that we've got a fair chance.

Let's not forget that after this time last season we were third in the league and were soon knocked off our perch. So even if we were to claim fourth next week, history has proved that it's extremely difficult to hold onto it going into the New Year.

In theory, it's going to be even harder for us to sustain our challenge into 2008 when we lose key players to the African Nations Cup. Harry is going to have to do a lot of wheeling and dealing during the January sales whilst keeping our good players at the club if we're to have any chance of fourth.

Breaking the top four is not an impossible task as it was only two years ago when Tottenham were one game away from finishing fourth and an Everton side that had just lost Wayne Rooney and were tipped for relegation by many somehow managed to grind their way to a Champions League place.

I'm still more focused on challenging for a UEFA Cup place, whether that means finishing 5th, 6th or 7th. We've got plenty of teams behind us who can capitalise on any slip ups we make now as Man City, Everton, Aston Villa, Blackburn and possibly West Ham will be aiming to finish fifth too.

Man City may even fancy their chances of breaking the "big four" barrier as they've got a good side already, a lot of money to spend in January and the right manager to do it. They're my favourites to break to barrier if any team do, but for the record I don't think they will.

It's just another signal of how far we have come when "keeping our feet on the ground" means focusing on challenging for the UEFA Cup places rather than the Champions League.

Mind you, it wasn't long ago that people were laughing at our dreams of playing in the Premier League. Maybe our dreams of playing in Europe will come true in the near future....
