Bolton vs Pompey Preview

Last updated : 08 February 2008 By Jim Bonner
A trip to Bolton is never anything to get too excited about but tomorrow's game will represent a big opportunity to get back to winning ways and kick-start our campaign for the European places.

Despite struggling at the wrong end of the table this season, Gary Megson has brought Bolton back to basics and they have showed signs of the old side that were irritating, in-your-face and hard to beat.

The Trotters have kept three consecutive clean sheets and are looking to build on their win at Reading last week by naming a similar side to the one that was victorious at the Madejski.

The main talking point will, of course, be how Matthew Taylor plays against the club that he called "home" last year. Will he score a trademark screamer or will our midfield contain and stifle him? Andy O'Brien is also facing Pompey for the first time since he left, so hopefully we can exploit his weaknesses.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Harry stick with the diamond formation that served us so well against Chelsea last week. Papa Bouba Diop will probably return to the starting line-up and John Utaka will probably make the bench. Sulley Muntari is still in Ghana as his side take on the Ivory Coast in the third-place play-off game.

This has the makings of an interesting, but difficult game. Bolton have beaten Manchester United at the Reebok this season and there haven't been too many teams that have gone there and won.

Even so, I see this as a winnable fixture and with a near-full-strength squad and the added threat of Defoe and Baros up front, I'm quietly confident that we can get a result tomorrow.

But then this is Bolton Wanderers, a side famed for ruining the party.

Matty Taylor got Pompey off to the perfect start by scoring an early goal but Bolton soon squeezed the life out of the game and Abdoulaye Faye scored from a corner then Ivan Campo scored an equally scrappy goal to give Wanderers a half-time lead.

Nicolas Anelka then pounced on a rebound to put Bolton even further ahead in the second half and Andy Cole's late solo effort was not good enough for a result.
