Blackburn vs Pompey Preview

Last updated : 22 September 2007 By Jim Bonner
It's matchday 7 in the Premier League and yet again the opposition are the favourites as Pompey travel to Lancashire to play a much-fancied Blackburn Rovers this season.

Since picking up our first away win in the Premiership at Ewood Park back in 2004, our visits since then have been dull, depressing and desperately poor having been beaten three times thanks to some bad luck and even worse performances.

It could be the same old story as Rovers are unbeaten at home since the 7th April when Aston Villa recorded a 2-1 win, whilst our disastrous away form needs no explaining to Pompey fans. I certainly don't fancy our chances tomorrow and would happily take a draw given how everything favours the home side.

Still, if Blackburn are going to beat us then they're going to have to outplay us instead of outfight us as they've done in previous years. Do you see the likes of Diop and Muntari being intimidated by pansy wind-up merchants like Robbie Savage? No, me neither...

Redknapp has hinted that he will go with a similar 4-3-3/4-5-1 system to the one he used against Liverpool, whilst selecting personnel that won't be "bullied" by Mark Hughes' more physical players.

It would be stupid to dismiss that Rovers can play some good football though with the likes of McCarthy, Santa Cruz, Gamst Pedersen and Bentley in their side. Therefore it wouldn't surprise me to see us sit back and go defensive to try and contain and frustrate them.

We might be able to take a bit of heart from the fact that Blackburn were absolutely woeful against the mighty Larissa on Thursday. (Kostas Chalkias was born there you know...) Captain Ryan Nelsen is also out with injury whilst Pompey should have a fully fit side to choose from.

Still, this is Portsmouth at Blackburn, so don't go expecting too much....
