Battling Pompey Make Their Point

Last updated : 25 February 2012 By Jim Bonner

Pompey were held to a goalless draw with Leeds at Fratton Park today but the major talking point will be referee Phil Gibbs' decision not to award the home side a penalty after the most blatant handball you'll ever see.

West Brom loanee went straight into the side and was the brightest player on the pitch as he was often involved in Pompey's more positive passing game.

The first half saw 'Appy's men dominate possession early on but fail to take advantage of that dominance as no real chances were created although Joel Ward did test Andy Lonergan with a header that was straight at him.

Leeds weren't really in the game but did go close before the break when Robert Snodgrass forced Stephen Henderson to push the ball out for a corner following a shot that was destined to find the bottom corner of the net.

The controversial moment of the game came on the stroke of half time as Darren O'Dea clearly handled Greg Halford's long throw in the box. The whole ground screamed for a penalty but the referee did not give it and was booed off the pitch by the home fans soon after.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with Pompey having more of the ball but not being able to break down the visitors' defence.

Neil Warnock, enjoying the abuse he was getting on his Leeds debut, thought his team had gone ahead when Ross McCormack's strong drive hit the crossbar and Robert Snodgrass nodded in the rebound from a yard out. However, the goal was rightfully disallowed for offside.

Leeds had got a foothold in the game and caught Pompey on the break with Luciano Becchio running through on goal by himself. The Argentinian looked to slot the ball into the corner of the net but Henderson did brilliantly to stick a leg out and deny him.

Henderson again had to produce a great save when some slack defending left Leigh Bromby alone at the far post, but the Pompey goalkeeper got his body in the way.

Leeds continued to push forward but eventually Pompey managed to claw their way back into the game and it was Lonergan who produced the best save of the game when George Thorne hit what looked like an unstoppable piledriver towards goal, only for some superb acrobatics to keep it out.

The hosts then had a goal disallowed when Greg Halford's long throw was adjudged to have gone straight into the back of the net. Unlike the Ipswich match, it seems like this call was the correct one.

The match petered out after that with both sides having to settle for a draw that helps neither in achieving their goals for the season.

You'd have to say a draw was a fair result simply because for all of our possession, Leeds had the two best chances which tells you everything you need to know.

Like Iain Dowie in a brothel, we simply cannot score at the moment and that is the third game in a row where Pompey have drawn a blank.

Results went against us today with Nottingham Forest surprisingly going to Birmingham and winning whilst Coventry beat Barnsley at the Ricoh.

The better news was Peterborough's late goal preventing Doncaster from winning and sending Portsmouth bottom, whilst yet another defeat for Bristol City has seen them be dragged right into the mire.

There is still plenty of time to get out of the bottom three but the main thing is that fans continue to turn up to Fratton Park in their numbers.

Over 17,500 saw the game today and created a superb atmosphere. We will need the same again for next week's match against Middlesbrough whose away support won't nearly be as great in numbers as Leeds' was.

Let's pack the park for the remaining eight home matches this season and give the players the support they deserve.
