Back To Square One

The latest twist in the neverending story that is the Pompey stadium saga is that the original plan of rotating the pitch at Fratton Park has now been revisited.

Pompey announced today that the Horsea Island project has had to be postponed because of the current economic climate (like we didn't see that one coming) and so the pitch rotation plan has now re-emerged after originally being ditched when Sacha took full control of the club.

This means a new North Stand will be built behind the current one and then the current one will be demolished as the extension to the Fratton End and a new north east corner is built, meaning that fans sat in the North Stand will be seated significantly further away from the pitch for a period of time.

The pitch will then be rotated and the current Milton End will be redeveloped to complete the new Fratton Park which will seat 30,000 people and is planned to be ready for the 2011/2012 season.

You can't help but laugh can you? If we'd have just stuck with this plan instead of being over-ambitious with an entirely new stadium plan then we'd probably be sitting in a new stadium right now!

Now we'll be waiting another three years at least for the new project to be completed but then this way the fans will be able to see the development as it happens when we're going to the games.

But the whole saga is beyond a joke and who is to say that the prospective new owner won't want to change to plan again? Then of course we have to convince the council to accept the plans which has always been a problem in the past.

Maybe Pompey are simply destined to remain at the old Fratton Park for all eternity...
