Coventry City: A brief history

Founded as Singers FC in 1883 by employees of cycle firm Singer, Coventry City got its current name in 1898 and moved to Highfield Road the year after. They were voted into the Football League in 1919 but didn't attain top flight status until 1967 under Jimmy Hill's management.

The Sky Blues would remain in the top division for 34 years until their relegation from the Premier League in 2001. During that time, Coventry finished as high as 6th and famously won the F.A. Cup in 1987 after beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Wembley.

Recent times have not been kind to Coventry as a move to the Ricoh Arena and a takeover from SISU culminated in financial problems, having to temporarily play matches at Northampton's Sixfields ground and eventual relegation to League Two. Under Mark Robins, the club bounced straight back to the third tier last season but SISU's cloud still looms.

The Manager: Mark Robins

An FA Cup winner as a player with Wimbledon in 1988, Thorn's playing career ended early due to a knee injury when he was 31.

Thorn joined Coventry as chief scout but was made joint manager of the first team with Steve Harrison when Aidy Boothroyd was sacked earlier last season.

He helped steer the Sky Blues to safety and was appointed on a full-time basis in April 2011 but couldn't prevent his side being relegated the following season but the club's board has stuck with him and were rewarded when he led them to victory in the play-offs in 2018.

The Ground: St. Andrew's (Capacity: 29,400 - Away: 3,000)

Coventry will be playing at St. Andrew's this season due to an ongoing dispute between the club and London Wasps.

St. Andrew's is a decent ground and probably better than the Ricoh Arena in all honesty. It's a good mix of old style football stands and the modern to give you a good view of the pitch. Photos below taken from Pompey's match with Birmingham in 2012.
