Season Review 07/08: November

Last updated : 05 June 2008 By Jim Bonner
November saw the winning run away from home continue in a month of few domestic games but one of Pompey's players would have a huge say on England's future on the international stage.

We began with a trip to a ground where we hadn't won at since we won the league in 1950.

03/11/07: Premier League Matchday #12: Newcastle United 1 Pompey 4

Pompey buried the St. James' Park bogey in some style as a three goal blitz meant the game was effectively won in the first ten minutes.

Noe Pamarot got the party started with an absolute belter into the top corner of the net and then immediately after Benjani shrugged off the embarrassing Claudio Cacapa and coolly finish to anger the home fans. The boos could be heard loud and clear when John Utaka easily ran through the Newcastle defence and slotted past Harper as Pompey fans couldn't believe what was happening!

The home side pulled a fluke goal back straight away when Michael Owen's shot was blocked but bounced onto the backtracking Sol Campbell and into the net. That didn't hamper us though as we dominated the midfield and grabbed a fourth goal in the second half when Niko Kranjcar's free kick eluded everyone in the box and drifted straight into the goal.

Following such a huge win at St. James' Park we faced a stiff test at home to a resurgent Manchester City under Sven Goran Eriksson.

Unlike some of our other drab draws at home, both sides played well and created chances. Glen Johnson weaved through the defence and his stinger produced an outstanding save by Joe Hart.

Darius Vassell had the best chance of the game but failed to tap in Martin Petrov's cross when he was unmarked in the centre of the box. David Nugent hit the post with a long range strike in the second half but City held on for the draw.

Up until this point of the season Niko Kranjcar was well known by Pompey fans but not so much by the rest of the country. That all changed on the 21st of November as his shot made a mockery of Scott Carson which ultimately led to England's failure to qualify for the little tournament that starts on Saturday.

The "wally with the brolly" was sacked straight after that disastrous result and Harry Redknapp emerged as a strong candidate to replace him. However his chances were dented when he and Peter Storrie were arrested for conspiracy to defraud and false accounting after the Birmingham game.

24/11/07: Premier League Matchday #14: Birmingham City 0 Pompey 2

Two goals of contrasting quality won the day at St. Andrews. Firstly, Sulley Muntari's weak shot somehow squeezed under his Ghanian compatriot Richard Kingson to the surprise of the travelling Pompey fans.

A scrappy affair ensued and Liam Ridgewell thought he'd equalised only for his goal to be ruled out for offside. Niko Kranjcar then capped off an amazing week for himself by arrowing an amazing free kick into the top corner of the net to seal yet another victory on the road.

So November turned out to be a good month for club but an awful one for country as Pompey ended it in 6th.
