Portsmouth Season Review 2011/2012: Pre-Season

Last updated : 11 May 2012 By Jim Bonner

This season just gone has been the worst in my living memory. Complete mismanagement off the pitch, complete upheaval on the pitch, some terrible results and some woeful PR stunts have made this is a miserable campaign.

In fact, the horrid public relations stories are still coming as it was today revealed that Portsmouth FC had still not paid charities it owed from the £8,000 it collected from its £2 matchday ticket charge.

It's just another shameful entry in the catalogue of errors that David Lampitt and co. have been responsible for during the last year. But when did this catastrophe begin?

On June 1st, Convers Sports Initiatives completed their takeover of Portsmouth Football Club. Vladimir Antonov, Roman Dubov and Chris Akers talked a good game and convinced many that they were "in it for the long haul" despite Antonov's alleged shady past.

The deals then started being done as David Norris arrived on a free transfer from Ipswich, albeit on a reportedly high wage. Jason Pearce also returned to Pompey having signed from Bournemouth for around £300,000.

David Nugent's contract expired and he made his way to Leicester but Steve Cotterill finally tied up a £750,000 deal for Derby striker Luke Varney whilst promising young goalkeeper Stephen Henderson was signed from Bristol City as competition for Jamie Ashdown.

Greg Halford made his loan move from Wolves permanent as Pompey's pre-season campaign began with the usual opener at Westleigh Park. Havant & Waterlooville were beaten 4-0 courtesy of second half goals from Joel Ward, Hayden Mullins, Dave Kitson and Luke Varney.

Tal Ben-Haim also took part in that game as it was revealed that his dispute with his employers had been resolved. This news was celebrated by the Israeli scoring an own goal against his former employers Chelsea who won 1-0 at Fratton Park after Varney had his penalty saved by Hilario.

Pompey's pre-season then took a turn for the worse as a second USA tour turned into a disaster. After scraping a 2-2 draw with American third tier side Charleston Battery's reserves thanks to an own goal and a Halford header, the rematch with their first team ended goalless.

The team were due to fly back and play Real Betis at Fratton Park but because their plane was damaged, there was no chance of them getting back to England on time and so the match was cancelled.

The La Liga side weren't without opposition as Havant & Waterlooville hosted them and were beaten 7-0. As for Pompey, the flight debacle would be a sign of things to come...
