Part 1 of 4
Welcome to the Fratton Faithful Full-Time Verdict - a continuation and reflection of the previous Half-Time Verdict written last year midway through the season which assessed the performance of each player and gave a prediction as to where they would be in the future. So here we are then, my final personal opinion on the 'keepers of Portsmouth Football Club for the 06/07 season.
#1 David James
|
HT Verdict: David James is the best goalkeeper we have had at Pompey for a long time and I think he could finish his career with us. I think he could play until he's 40 and still be just as good as he is now. He's been one of the best 'keepers in the league this season and it's a pleasure to know that he plays for us.
"Jamo" has continued to be an outstanding performer this season and has dominated the Pompey Player Of The Season awards having only had one poor game all season (away at Blackburn). I, like many others believe that James should have taken Van Der Sar's place in the PFA Team Of The Season because of the amount of excellent saves and takes he has made to keep us in many games this campaign. What a signing he has been for us!
FT Verdict: Jamo wants to be around by the time he is 40 and if he carries on producing the form he has this season, then he will be a mainstay in the Pompey goal for years to come.
#15 Jamie Ashdown
|
HT Verdict: I think Jamie will stay until the end of the season at least as David James' understudy but at his age he won't want to be sitting on the bench throughout his career. He might have to leave Pompey, and even drop down a division if he wants first-team football but every club needs a substitute goalkeeper and we could do worse than Ashdown.
I was surprised when Jamie signed a new contract despite revealing his frustrations about playing second fiddle to David James. He had a bad time at Norwich earlier this season and has just warmed the bench for the rest of the season. He is an able deputy for Jamo if we need him, but I don't expect he'll play much and he could end up on loan again next season.
FT Verdict: He'll remain our Number 2 goalkeeper for now but lack of opportunity will see him move next season, probably temporarily due to the lack of 'keepers we have as Nick Jordan and Asmir Begovic are still too inexperienced for a place on the Fratton Park bench right now.
#33 Dean Kiely
|
HT Verdict: Deano just wants to play football so I think he will leave in January, probably for a Championship club. West Brom are rumoured to be interested and perhaps Luton will want him permanently. I'm sure all Pompey fans will be grateful for his contribution on and off the pitch last season and therefore won't begrudge him a move away.
As we all expected, Deano left for the Baggies in January having only made one appearance in the Carling Cup this season. He'll be remembered for his role in our Great Escape last season but the bottom line is that David James is a much better 'keeper than Kiely. Who knows? We could see him next season at The Hawthorns...
#36 Nick Jordan
|
HT Verdict: Who knows? My crystal ball can't predict that far into the future! Will he be playing in the Premiership or the Conference in years to come?
Like Begovic it could be a long time before we ever see Jordan in between the sticks in a Pompey shirt, if ever. I expected him to out on loan this season but it never happened. Next season might be his chance to do so.
